What’s What With Lucy - The World Beyond Twilight

The World Beyond Twilight

Remember two years ago when there was no Twilight Saga (the movies) around? Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner were still faces we would recognize now and then, but not sure where… Their lives were not endangered by crazy intense fans who do nothing else but stand outside the set imagining several scenarios where Edward would rescue and love Bella from Jacob forever. And I’m not talking exclusively about teenage girls. I’m also talking about fully grown women who leave their kids home to stalk the stars.

See, don’t get me wrong, I am a Twilight fan. Read all the books in 10 days and suffered from a little abstinence when I was done with the Saga. Refused to read anything else for several months in memory of Edward & Bella. However, what brought me to write about this today was that, last night, for the gazillionth time, I watched ‘Pride and Prejudice’ on TV and was, again, fascinated with Jane Austen’s simple but magnificent plot. Such a great cast! Such a great story and if you stop to rationally analyze it, you’ll see that’s all about marry your daughters to the right rich men, so that you’ll not get invicted from your own house and that being a smartass lady back then could make you struggle to be proposed to. A one-hour-and-forty-minute long movie without a SINGLE liplock and I cried like a baby when Mr. Darcy tells Lizzie: “I love, love, love you”.

Then I remembered Twilight. And I remembered something I read about Rachelle Lefevre when she was coldly replaced by Bryce Dallas Howard to play Victoria. Summit claimed Rachelle would be busy filming Barney’s Version in Rome for 10 days. At the time I thought about the reasons that would make an actress accidentally jeopardize her contract with the most powerful franchise of all times for a 10-day job, not even as the leading lady. And then the names Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman came to mind! Of course! Her part in the most famous vamp romance could be over, but the purpose of her career was right there: “it’s like getting paid to go to school”, someone wisely wrote! Have you seen ‘Sideways’? I rest my case.

Anna Kendrick, who plays Jessica in Twilight, is following Rachelle’s wise steps. Thank God she resembles her character in nothing. Anna stars in “Up in the Air” (look how gorgeous Anna looks), alongside George Clooney and Jason Bateman. There’s more! Up in the Air will celebrate its highly anticipated debut at the Toronto International Film Festival and opens in theaters December 4th. Anna plays Natalie and goes head to head with George Clooney and it’s her role and her relationship with Clooney’s characther that is the catalyst in the evolution of the latter. In short, do you think Anna is dreading the end of the Twilight Saga? I don’t for a minute! Can you think of a higher compliment than that? I can’t!

Even the girl of the hour, Kristen Stewart, was so thrilled to portrait Joan Jett and by her depressed looks everytime she has to face the Twi-hard crowd one can just assume that she can’t wait for the end of it. So can’t Robert Pattinson.

Just think, there’s a whole world beyond Twilight. The saga is just a story and it’s up to us to make the best we can out of it. Not in the crazy way, mind you. All I want to say is be grounded. A world where artists are afraid of their fans is a bizarre world. Think about it!
