Default Supernatural and Alcohol

Is it just me or do they actually drink quite a lot alcohol in the show?

It seems to have increased lately and I'm not speaking of Dean's trauma in hell and that he's obviously drinking more now, because of that.

They have drinks whenever they're in a bar etc., and they also drink when the boys are in their motel rooms, after their job is done, or when they're with Bobby etc. etc. Either Sam hands a bottle of beer over to Dean or vice versa.

Don't get me wrong, I've no problem with that, actually. I'm an adult and I know that it's not necessary to drink alcohol to be cool or something like that.

But obviously this show has teenage fans as well and I'm not so sure, if they won't be influenced somehow by that.

And actually what I'm wondering about, too, is the fact, that in the USA nobody is allowed to drink alcohol in public (Or am I wrong about that?), but they don't have problems with all the drinking in tv shows?

As I said before, I don't have any problems with the boys drinking a beer or two.
I'm just wondering, why there is not so much of it in the first seasons and why the network, who is obviously always "watching over" the stuff they show in Supernatural, don't have any issues with showing the boys drinking so much alcohol lately.

So please don't bite my head off, I'm really just curious to know what you think about that.

well, you are right, i like the fact that the boys don't smoke, at least, i have never seen a scene where they are smoking, not because the example they can give but because they need to be in perfect shape in their line of work so i always thought it was great that they didn't smoke, that way they would be healthier, about "alcohol", well, i'm not from the US, i wonder how much alcohol a beer in the US has, here in Peru one beer has more alcohol than beers in other countries, that's what i know, but i don't know how it is in the United States, mmm, i guess someone from there would have to clarify that

Maybe that's a big problem. Even The "Dean" has problem differentiating "Reality" and "Porn". I am sure many people, Adults and teens alike, would have problem differentiating "alcohol use in a TV show" and "alcohol use in reality" as well.

I think, it's not important how much alcohol a beer in the US has. The "problem" is just the bad example they give, whenever they drink alocohol to get their heads cleared or to be able to solve a problem or whatever they might drink it for.

AND: drinking alcohol is also NOT healthy at all.

I, of course, appreciate that they don't show the boys smoking, but drinking is not a good habit either, is it?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm talking about. I've just watched "Houses of the Holy" this evening, and Dean even drinks in the church and it doesn't matter actually that he only takes one sip. AND again he offers it to Sam, too.

Don't get me wrong, I love Dean to death, but I don't like this "take a sip and then deal with your problems" kind of thing. It might fit the character's way of life in this show, but I so don't like it.

IMO it is NOT necessary for the shows credibility to show their main characters drinking so frequently. And it doesn't matter if they're not getting drunk everytime they're drinking.

It's just the fact, that it seems to be "normal" at SN to drink a beer or a whiskey etc. whenever they talk about things or whenever they have to deal with a problem. That so gets across a wrong message to teens e.g., who are watching this show, IMO.

I don't think that those green bottles are supposed to be just mineral water?

I don't know whether Jared or Jensen are smoking in real life.

I personally doubt it, because they do make an effort to stay in shape, they're working out very much. Somebody, who's that much into sports normally don't smoke.

But well, we will never know for sure and actually it's their personal choice.

As long as they don't show them smoking on-screen, it's not our business to discuss their "bad" habits in their private lives IMO.

They're adults and they should know, that smoking isn't healthy.

My reason for starting this thread was the bad habit of the Winchester boys on-screen, in this case, drinking. And that actually does bother me....

I've never seen Jared smoking, but I did see 1 pic of a friend of Jensen lighted a cigarette for him, with his healthy appearance, Jensen might be considered as social smoker....not necessarily a 'smoker', imo (and some other fans) that is

i've never really paid much attention to their 'drinking habits' on the show but yeah lately they've been drinking alot more.

I think people are alot more leniant towards drinking than they are too smoking. I dont know about the US but here in Australia people arent allowed to drink in public i.e. on streets/in parks but can in restaurants/bars/ their own homes.

Drinking is a social thing and the boys often do it when they have talks. But people also drink when they have problems which the boys do. We've only seen the boys drunk a few times on the show though usually they just have a beer or two. Also i think they were sorta raised that way around John, that having a drink was ok.

Anyway yeah :p

I actually think that this is just so the boys are busy... I mean, if they'd just sit there, doing nothing it wouldn't be much fun to watch... And having the boys draw or stuff like that wouldn't look good...
