That's a really good point, Jonny. However, I'm going to disagree that just because you're operating logically means you have no need for a soul. A very much do believe that Sam needs his soul, that really anybody needs their soul. Operating logically is one thing, not having a soul is a whole other can of worms.

It's true that, being soulless means he doesn't have conflict and while sleeping process the conflicts we face everyday and we also recharge our mental batteries, like you said. But the sleep does much more than that, like recharge our physical strength, helps with body restoration (when wounded), the immune system is affected, some hormones only gets fabricated while sleeping and so on. To sleep is more a physical necessity, than emotional. So, I'm sorry, the "he doesn't sleep because he doesn't have a soul" symptom isn't working to me at all. I'm having a hard time believing this even being fiction, just like if they try to sell the "he can't feel anything" concept. Because I'm pretty sure he felt a lot pleased with himself since the beginning of the season, he laughed, etc...

Maybe they'll explain all this during the episode to satisfy me. If not.... Well, I can go with the flow. But it would be nicer if they could make things more consistent, this being just a fiction or not.

I think you might have misunderstood what I was getting at.

Need.... to exist, apparently not. Sam exists as is with out a soul.

Need.... to live, yes, of course and kind of my point.


To be without a soul is to lack the ability to feel, to feel what is right and wrong. All Sam has left is some twisted sense of logic.


Think of it as trying to navigate at night and without a compass. You'll take a look around and make your best guess and go in whichever direction you think is the right way, but you don't know.

You may end up being right, but it's likely you be slightly off or maybe end up going completely in the wrong direction. Without a compass (a soul) to guide you, you just don't exactly know which is the right way or the wrong way. That's not to say you'll be perfect with one, especially if it's been damaged.

In fact, you may just outright choose the wrong direction despite what your compass says. It's a choice, but at least with one even one, even if it is messed up a bit, you generally know the right way and the wrong way.
