Smallville Burning Questions: "Absolute Justice" Edition
by Damian Holbrook February 04, 2010 02:15 PM EST

The wait is almost over! After almost nine seasons, on Friday, Feb. 5 at 8/7c on The CW, the super-drama will finally unveil “Absolute Justice,” its first ever two-hour movie event. An effects-and-action buffet featuring Hawkman, Stargirl, Dr. Fate and some surprise cameos from members of the Justice Society of America, we decided it was smart to grill some of the folks connected to the fun for some details on what to expect.

What’s up with the JSA? “It’s really a mystery of who these heroes of yesterday once were,” says exec producer Brian Peterson. “For the whole first hour of the movie, Chloe, Clark and Oliver are uncovering the mystery, piece by piece by piece of who these people were. And as they do, they uncover more and more people [in the Society].”

And that mystery is…? “Something is going on and there are these clues that there might be this group of vigilantes with criminal records who are making people disappear or killing [them],” reveals Justin Hartley (Oliver/Green Arrow). “So Chloe, big-brain that she is, and Oliver—medium-sized brain—go to investigate this thing and Ollie’s joking around, like ‘what’s up with these people, are they weird, this is kind of goofy.’ Then they find out that it’s the JSA. Then in the second part, Hawkman kind of tells the whole story about why they are here.”

How close are they to their comic-book roots? “The back-stories of the characters are kind of adaptations,” explains Geoff Johns, the DC Comics virtuoso who also penned the movie. “They had to be simplified a little bit because of their complexity. But they’re pretty close. The one who is a bit of a different take is Dr. Fate, because I wanted to explore another side…make the helmet and Dr. Fate a bit more of a duality.”

Will we see the Society all together? “We promise that you will see a shot of the entire JSA assembled within the first hour,” says Peterson. “But you better wait ‘til the very end!”

Biggest fanboy moment? “Probably when Fate puts his helmet on,” says Johns.

Who is front-and-center? Peterson’s fellow exec-producer Kelly Souders says that it’s a “heavy” Chloe-Clark episode, but that we’ll see a lot of Oliver as well. “I think it puts all of our JLA members to the task.”

Did directing part 2 limit Tom Welling’s screen time? Apparently not, confirms Hartley. “I think he has more in the second hour than he has in the first. But don’t worry, when he’s not there, I’m there for you!”

Will there be a JLA-JSA united front? That would be a big "yes" from Souders. “We’re introducing a new villain, which will have an ongoing presence throughout the rest of the season, Checkmate and Amanda Waller (Pam Grier). Checkmate is one of the most prominent agencies in our mythology…their goal is to protect the world from aliens. And they will use any means necessary to conscript all the heroes to fight aliens. Clearly, when your characters are aliens, that doesn’t go so well!”

On writing his second Smallville episode… “I wanted to write for Justin and Erica Durance,” says Johns, who was thrilled “to write for Lois Lane on the screen” and give words to Cassidy Freeman’s Tess, as well. “I didn’t have the opportunity to write for them when I did last season’s ‘Legion’ episode.” But he saves his highest praise for the show’s only remaining original cast members. “Tom and Allison (Mack, Chloe) are great. Allison can literally deliver any line and make it sound brilliant. It’s kind of amazing.”

What’s his take on Clois? “[Lois] and Clark together is great. That is the best part…the chemistry between those two has really grown this year.”

Does Clark finally realize he’s the Man? Another “yes” from Peterson! “Hawkman in particular definitely throws a mirror in front of Clark and forces him to look at himself and the role he has been playing so far.”

So the JLA healing can begin? “The thing I am most proud of is shining a light on their relationships at this point,” confesses Johns. “The season started with them very close, and it has since become about the job at hand instead of their personal relationships…and that has hurt the team. In this episode, we show that they are not doing as well as they used to because of that.”

Is Oliver creeping on Speedy? “No! She looks at me that way…I’m not doing any of that. She’s propositioning him. And I’m like ‘no…you’re a child. I sleep with women’,’’ laughs Hartley. “I think everybody expects him to do that, and when he doesn’t they wonder what’s wrong with him. Does he have the flu?”

Do the producers have an end-plan if this is the last season? We do, what we’re hoping…obviously we want a season 10, but we have to plan for whatever comes our way,” says Souders.

Would that include wrapping the Zod story? “Yes, but we can’t say when that is going to be.”

I'm glad Clark's going to be in the first part a little more than we thought. Since AM directed Warrior, Chloe shouldn't be in the second part that much.

If anyone was going to nudge Clark towards Superman, it has to be the JSA especially Hawkman.

I think the whole point of the movie is for the JLA to see what went wrong with their group, coming together again, and move forward from there from this point forward.

If the show gets a 10th season, I think the Zod storyline will be pushed back there for the Checkmate storyline.
