Quentin Tarantino Sued Over Kill Bill Character

Quentin Tarantino didn’t win an Oscar this week, but this wasn’t exactly what he had in mind for a consolation prize.

The Inglourious Basterds helmer has been hit with a plagiarism lawsuit by a man accusing him and former Miramax chairman Harvey Weinstein of stealing his concept for what eventually became a deadly assassin in their Kill Bill double bill.

In the suit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court Tuesday, Dannez Hunter claims he had submitted a treatment to Miramax back in 1999 featuring a character named Ren Short who hails from a historical Samurai lineage and watches his mother brutally murdered “in a cartoon format.”

Sound familiar?

Get the whole suit and nothing but here.

It just so happens that four years later Tarantino dreamed up an Anime sequence for his Kill Bill flicks in which a sword-wielding assassin, played by Lucy Liu, codenamed Cottonmouth, otherwise known as O-Ren Ishii, witnesses her parents killed on orders from a Japanese mob boss. In his vision, O-Ren eventually becomes a member of the Deadly Vipers and takes her revenge by assuming control of the Tokyo Yakuza.

The parallels were just too much for Hunter who felt he had to take legal action. In a separate allegation, the plaintiff, who describes himself as a minority and former “inner-city youth,” also alleged the Disney subsidiary passed him over for employment and hired Jews and whites instead (In the words of Col. Hans Landa, “the Juden!”)

So aggravating matters further, he felt particularly shafted when Miramax never got back to him about his application.

“[Plaintiff] was never given a return phone call, as numerous similar situated less qualified Jewish and White people were bestowed job after job after job,” Hunter alleges.

Maybe Tarantino should bring in the Bear Jew for this one.

No word why he waited seven—count ‘em seven—years to go to court. But the California native is seeking $1 million in damages.

Reps for the director and Miramax did not return phone calls seeking comment. No doubt they’re thinking it’s just a bunch of pulp fiction.

New ‘The Runaways’ TV Spot

‘The Runaways’, a biopic about the 70’s all-girl-band, premiered last January at the Sundance Festival, but will arrive in theaters throughout the US on March 19th.

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning, playing Joan Jett and Cheri Currie respectively, have the spotlight on them, since the movie reportedly focus on their gay relationship.

Official Movie Synopsis – Of all the bands to come out of the 1970s Los Angeles music scene, The Runaways are by far the most uniquely fascinating. This is partially due to their music but more so to the fact that they were teenage girls whose wild and reckless lifestyle was the stuff of legend. Focusing on the duo of guitarist/vocalist Joan Jett and lead vocalist Cherie Currie as they navigate a rocky road of touring and record-label woes, the film chronicles the band’s formation as well as their meteoric rise under the malevolent eye of an abusive manager.

Orlando Bloom Wants A ‘Hobbit’ Role

orlandoOrlando Bloom is desperate to reprise his role as an elf-prince in upcoming Lord Of The Rings prequel The Hobbit - he’s already asked Peter Jackson for a part in the new movie.

The British actor landed his breakthrough role playing Legolas in Jackson’s 2001 epic The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and he went on to star in the two sequels. Work has now begin on a prequel, based on J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit - the book which began the fantasy story franchise - and Bloom wants to be involved.

He admits he has already emailed Lord of the Rings director Jackson, who will write the screenplay for the film, to inquire about the casting. He tells MTV.com, “I shot an email to Pete and I said, ‘You know, if you want me to don the blond wig and pointy ears again, I’d be honored to do it.’ He said - funnily enough - ‘Well, we’ll see’. They’re very, very hush-hush.”

However, Bloom admits the decision may rest with Guillermo del Toro, who will direct the blockbuster. He adds, “It’s Guillermo’s movie and I’m a huge fan of that man. He’s obviously going to take his own idea of it, but I’m excited for that movie. I think it’s going to be great.”

The film will be released in two parts, with the first picture expected in 2012.

Avatar: Lets Compare Apples to Apples not Oranges!

Congratulations to Avatar, James Cameron’s CG-laden sci-fi opus, for its spectacular box-office success.

Yesterday, in only its most recent milestone, Avatar became the most popular movie…since Star Wars: Episode I–The Phantom Menace. avatarYes, I’m well aware that Avatar also surpassed Titanic to become the planet’s biggest box-office grosser. But the fact remains that, due to the rising price of movie tickets, more North Americans saw Phantom Menace in the theater than have seen Avatar so far. In fact, Avatar currently ranks 26th all-time when you adjust for inflation and probably won’t crack the top-10.

I’m not trying to diminish Avatar’s truly awesome impact, but a little perspective can’t hurt. Yes, James Cameron has the two highest-grossing films of all-time. But in terms of tickets sold — arguably a better reflection of popularity – Titanic and Avatar rank 6th and 26th. Compare that to Steven Spielberg’s resume, which includes No. 4 (E.T.), No. 7 (Jaws), No. 16 (Raiders of the Lost Ark, and No. 17 (Jurassic Park). And don’t get me started on this country’s unrivaled affection for No. 1 Gone With the Wind, which played to packed houses for years.

Comparing the success of blockbusters from different Hollywood eras is a complex and perhaps futile assignment, due to new revenue streams, international markets, etc., etc. But it’s still worth noting that films of yesteryear were every bit the pop-cultural phenomena as today’s Avatar or The Dark Knight, if not more so. And from a bottom-line point of view, forgettaboutit. Star Wars grossed $461 million stateside; E.T. checked out with $435 million. Both films were made for less than $12 million each. No matter Avatar’s eventual tally, those rates of return will probably never be equaled by a studio film.

Do you find these comparisons and debates as fascinating as I do, or am I simply grasping at straws to defend the blockbusters of my youth? - by Jeff Labrecque

newmoon-dvdNew Moon” is coming to DVD and Blu-Ray on March 20.

The Saturday release date will allow for midnight release parties at retailers across the country.

The home release of the box office hit will bridge the gap between the theatrical release of “New Moon” last November and the next film in “The Twilight Saga,” “Eclipse,” which is due June 30.

“New Moon” earned over $142 million during its first weekend in theaters — the third-biggest debut ever.

Among the DVD and Blu-Ray release’s special features are an audio commentary from director Chris Weitz and editor Peter Lambert, a six-part documentary on the making of the film, behind the scenes footage with soundtrack band Muse and three music videos.

“Twilight,” the first film in the series, was the top-selling DVD of 2009.

Star Trek Sequel Beams Up a Release Date

January 13, 2010 by happiness

star-trekDammit, Jim, we’re reading a studio announcement, not looking into a crystal ball.

Which is why just about the only thing we know about the Star Trek sequel—other than the fact that it’s definitely happening—is that it’s finally landed a release date.

Paramount has selected the star date of June 29, 2012, to unleash the second installment of its blockbuster franchise on a nation of eager Trekkers.

Everything else, though, is anyone’s guess.

All the principals—including the dynamic duo of Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, and requisite candy Zoe Saldana—are expected back, but there’s no word on who will play the baddie. And if it’s the movie’s title you’re looking for, keep looking.

Which isn’t to say we don’t know some things…

J.J. Abrams, who bravely directed the crew of the Starship Enterprise to box-office—and, as it happens, awards-show—glory last summer, says he wants back for round two, but has not officially been signed on to helm. However, he will at least be back as a producer, while regular partner and Lost showrunner Damon Lindelof, along with Star Trek penners Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, will be pitching in on the sequel’s writing duties.

The summer of 2012 is getting more crowded by the minute. Along with Trek, the curious re-reboot of Spider-Man, The Avengers, and, in all likelihood, the Wolverine sequel are all slated for release.

And there may be room for one more. Paramount also confirmed today, to much less fanfare, that it has greenlit a sequel to its effects-heavy, disappointment-full G.I. Joe.

No release date has yet been set.
